Provident Place Theatre
Redwater, Alberta

In December of 2009, Barr Ryder Architects & Interior Designers were retained by the Town of Redwater to investigate the potential of converting a previously unused curling rink into a community cultural and performing arts centre.

A budget for this project has been identified as $1.5 million and is intended to provide a facility that meets the demands of community theatre, amateur performers and artists, travelling professionals and recreation arts contributors. The facility is to be designed to accommodate multidisciplinary needs and be versatile. As this facility is for community use, it must be designed to be accessible to community groups and contributors of all ages and abilities.

The proposed renovation meets the parameters as set out for community, professionals and various performers. In addition to the basic program requirements, Barr Ryder identified a Master Plan for the cultural centre that can be implemented through future development and phasing. Included in this Master Plan is the ability to divide the performance hall into three (3) spaces, allowing for increased flexibility and increased programming ability and addition of a public corridor on the front of the facility to access the three (3) newly created program spaces.

The second floor of the facility was reviewed with respect to the overall Master Plan and the opportunities to convert a portion or majority of the second level to a fitness/wellness centre complete with new change rooms and additional program room space.

Barr Ryder researched the potential kitchen requirements for such a facility as well as consulted with the theatre specialist to identify the appropriate stage size and configuration.
