2007 Jeux du Canada Games Centre

Barr Ryder Architects, in association with KZA of Whitehorse, developed a new venue to host the 2007 Canada Winter Games, as well as provide for the recreational needs of the community.

The Multiplex is built adjacent to an existing aquatics centre and includes:

• 900 seat (300 permanent, 600 temporary) Olympic-size ice arena
• 300 seat NHL-size ice arena
• 2 indoor soccer fields, 250 seats each
• 3 lane indoor running track
• Child play areas
• 500 sq. m. fitness facility
• Multipurpose and meeting rooms
• 200 seat family lounge
• Space for a future climbing wall

The design of the facility incorporates a strong linear axis to navigate between the recreation components, allowing the user to experience all events in the facility from the concourse. The axis is terminated on the south end by the entrance and on the north end by a seating area that captures the vistas of the Whitehorse landscape.

The exterior of the facility reflects the locale of Whitehorse through the use of heavy timber detailing, representative of the vast surrounding forests. The use of sunshades, large overhangs, and energy-efficient mechanical and electrical systems all promote Whitehorse’s dedication to the environment and sustainable buildings.

This facility was completed October 2005.
